Get Gorgeous March 22, 2012
As far as we know there have been no poems or songs written to honor seaweed — the macroscopic, multicellular, benthic, marine algae (although just saying that makes us want to dance). However, that may change soon because the world is getting to love seaweed.
Yes, seaweed is more than just what keeps your spicy tuna and rice sushi roll together. The potent green plant has been shown to have both amazing beauty and healthy benefits!
In fact, it’s one of the secrets behind the beauty science at Thibiant, one of the world’s most prestigious spas located in Beverly Hills. The spa’s detoxifying seaweed wrap is a must-have among Hollywood’s A-list. One of their expert body therapists, Pattie, explained, “Seaweed helps to soften and smooth the texture of the skin, making the skin look and feel hydrated longer than normal.”
Further, the seaweed wrap is also said to aid digestion as well as reduce the appearance of cellulite. Pattie said, “It’s our number one pre-event body treatment during awards season as it releases water weight and you instantly feel lighter, less bloated, and more comfortable in your clothes.”
But beauty is just the beginning. Seaweed has also been shown to have tremendous health benefits. Michelle Butler, a holistic nutritionist at Nutra Brilliance in Redondo Beach, CA said, “Seaweeds are known to reduce blood cholesterol, remove heavy metals from the body, counteract obesity, strengthen bones and teeth, and improve digestion! Plus, they are one of the richest sources of vegetarian protein, and some varieties contain up to 10 times more calcium than milk!”
In fact, many sea vegetables contain 10 to 20 times the minerals of land plants, plus a range of vitamins. “They contain vitamin A for your skin and eyesight, as well as iodine for proper thyroid functioning.”
And if stress or the sniffles are still bringing you down, forget the OJ! “During cold and stressful times, it’s best to replenish your body with minerals, and seaweed is the perfect remedy.”
As if we needed another reason to hit the sushi bar!
